Wednesday Reading Group

Very many years ago when I was at primary school the last lesson on a Friday afternoon was so looked forward to by all the pupils. Our Head Teacher would take off the shelf what seemed to be an enormous black book and from it she would read wonderful stories to us - we could hardly wait for the following Friday afternoon when we could get back to the next installment.

Teaching methods have changed somewhat since those days, little boxes have to be ticked, countless forms have to be filled in, percentages have to looked at and worked on - all this as well as teachign! There's no time for the children to sit back and just enjoy listening to a story.

Somebody at Mundesley Junior School thought how nice it would if the children were able to listen to and read stories without too much interruption - if they were able to enjoy their reading - if they could lose themselves , for just a little while in a book.

It will soon be just over a year since six volunteersstarted coming into school for one morning a week to listen to and help children of Class 4/5BH with their reading.

If you come into school on a Wednesday morning from 11am to 12 noon you would come across little groups in various parts of the school - three or four children here - five or six children somewhere else, each group with an adult.

Some of the children can read extremely well, others cannot - but these little groups are learning to work together as a team and they help one another along and as a consequence improve their reading skills. All the volunteers feel it is a privilege to be part of the reading scheme.

The children are a delight to work with, they have such wonderful books to read and -- just like Friday afternoons all those years ago I can hardly wait for Wednesday morning to come round.

Janet Munro.

Somebody reading this may think - I'd like to help with that, it's something I could do. If you feel you'd like to know more about this scheme please get in touch with the school secretary in the first instance.

Yr 5 are on the Local Radio

Year 5 have been working on a project about local food. They looked into where our food comes from and why buying local food might be better.
The project has involved a visit into school from a local butcher that made sausages with the children, a farm visit to Stody Estate, a walk to the local shops in Mundesley to find out what the greengrocer, butcher and fishmonger sell and a competition set by a local pub to design a tasty, healthy & locally sourced dish for their summer menu.

As part of the project the children worked in teams to help promote local food developing leaflets, posters, newspaper reports, photostory 'TV' adverts, a playscript and a radio report.
