Did you know it has another name of 'Water
Strider.'
It can literally run on water.
It's legs don't break through the surface of the water.
Scientifically: Water striders or pond skaters are fascinating creatures
which seem to glide over the surface of the water. The pressure of a leg
produces a trough shaped depression (meniscus) on the water surface film,
and the surface tension of the water easily supports the weight of the
insect. Locomotion can be achieved through processes of walking, rowing,
and skating, and they can move quite quickly to catch prey or escape predation.
Pond skaters are predatory, and sense their prey by detecting surface ripples.
How do
they know where their prey is?
