Where does water come from?
This is fascinating because nobody seems to be sure.
OriginalIy it might have come from outer space on comets or meteorites or it could have been seperated from the rocks that make up the earth.
What is water?
If you know your chemistry, water is made from 2 elements.
Hydrogen and Oxygen
A small molecule of water has three atoms, two hydrogen and one oxygen.
Usually written as
H20

Water is the only natural material that exists in all
three states of matter .

Solid - Liquid - Gas
Ice - Water - Water vapour
Water can absorb a lot of heat before it heats up.
Water has a high surface tension.
In other words water
is sticky and elastic.
This is why this guy doesn't sink.

See how the water dimples where his leg touches the surface.
This is
surface
tension,
made visible.
The 'stickiness' of the water stops the insect from sinking into it.
Have you ever noticed the beads of water on newly waxed car?
Water is a tasteless, odorless liquid.
Water is transparent.
Many subtances can dissolve in water.
